Dr Gabriela Alexandru

Background

Gabriela Alexandru was born in Bucharest, Romania and she initiated her studies in Biology at the University of Bucharest. After receiving a BSc degree in Biochemistry in 1995, and a Master's degree in Molecular Biology in 1997, Gabriela moved to Vienna, Austria for her PhD studies. There she took her first steps as a researcher under the supervision of Kim Nasmyth at the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP). Her PhD research explored various aspects of cell cycle progression using budding yeast as a model organism. At the core of her work was the regulation of sister chromatid separation during the normal cell cycle and upon spindle damage. She was awarded a PhD degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology in 2001.

Gabriela then started her American adventure as a postdoctoral researcher in Raymond Deshaies' laboratory at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). There she began to work with mammalian cells in culture and became acquainted with the power of mass spectrometry in discovering novel protein-protein interactions. The focus of her postdoctoral research was the regulation of protein degradation and, in particular, the role of the p97 ATPase and its co-factors.

In 2009, Gabriela joined the Protein Ubiquitylation Unit at SCILLS, where she intends to expand her studies of the p97 network to better understand its function under normal conditions and in neurodegeneration.
